■ How are the protection classes defined?
The protection classes are defined for all electrical equipment in EN 61140 (Germany: VDE 0140-1). There are four protection classes for electrical equipment, whereby only protection classes one to three are approved in the EU and other industrialised countries. The protection class is to be distinguished from the degree of protection classified with the IP (Ingress Protection according to IEC 60529).
